expanded steadily. J&R now covers a massive city
block across from City Hall Park in the heart of
Downtown Manhattan. The stores are a "must-see" for
many worldwide tourists and a "must-shop" for New
Yorkers in the know for electronic gifting ideas.

IMS Insight into the New iMAC's
One of the most profound, yet least discussed, implications
of the Internet is that it will push businesses to adopt shared, generic processes. Highly
efficient ways of doing everything from procurement to customer service will be built into
software that will be universally available. Such standardization will bring big benefits.
It will reduce companies' operating costs and make it easier for them to work together in
seamless partnerships. But there's a dark side. As processes become homogeneous, companies
will find it harder and harder to distinguish themselves from the pack.
So where will competitive advantage come from? Mainly from
human creativity and ingenuity. Those are two things that can't be scripted by software
engineers with imagination. The all-in-one iMac packs a complete,
high-performance computer—including the latest Intel Core 2 Duo
processors—into a beautifully thin, anodized aluminum and glass
design. The latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor runs at 2.4GHz with
advanced 45-nm process technology and 6MB of shared L2 cache,
allowing you to run your applications faster and more efficiently
than ever before. iMac features a glossy 20-inch widescreen display
and ATI Radeon HD graphics that
gives a blow-you-away level of detail and realism in games,
three-dimensional graphics, high-resolution photos, and
High-Definition Video that
comes alive with rich, vivid color. Built into the top of iMac is an
iSight camera. You’ll hardly notice it’s there until you want to
launch iChat, Photo Booth, or iMovie. iSight is easy to use and
highly advanced. The remarkable picture quality and color accuracy
make this tiny feature huge. With iLife ’08, Mac OS X Leopard,
built-in wireless, speakers, and ultrathin anodized aluminum Apple
Keyboard, you’ll be creating, sharing, surfing, and playing within
minutes of opening the box.

yourself in faster, smoother, more lifelike 3D gameplay. Click
anywhere on the all-new glass Multi-Touch trackpad—the spacious,
smooth surface doubles as the button. Multi-Touch gestures now come
to the MacBook, so you can use your fingers to swipe through photos,
rotate an image, and pinch to Zoom in and out. With the new
four-finger swipe gesture, access Exposé modes and toggle between
open applications. Inside the new MacBook is a powerful Intel Core 2
Duo processor running at 2.4GHz with an increased 1066MHz frontside
Bus and next-generation
1066MHz RAM. That faster Memory lets you quickly and easily
manipulate large, complex files and keep more applications open at

0.95" thin and 4.5lbs, MacBook is truly the next generation of

Apple MacBook AIR 13.3" ultralight notebook Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6GHz / 2GB RAM / 120GB Hard Drive / NVIDIA GeForce 9400M / iSight Webcam / Bluetooth / Extreme WiFi / Mac OS X Leopard / 3 Pounds
.
MacBook Air has amazing new graphics—up to
four times faster—and a larger hard drive. Yet it’s still ultrathin,
ultraportable, and ultra unlike anything else. It’s just 0.16 inch
at its thinnest point, 0.76 inch at its thickest point, and a mere
3.0 pounds. With a 120GB hard drive, 2GB of fast DDR3 SDRAM, and the
Intel Core 2 Duo processor,
MacBook Air has more power for everyday tasks. But unlike other
ultraportable designs, it doesn’t compromise on features. The
LED-backlit display provides instant full screen brightness the
moment you open MacBook Air. LED technology also makes the display
more power efficient, which translates to long Battery life. The
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M provides up to an amazing
4x performance boost over the
original MacBook Air. Photos appear in iPhoto quickly. Transitions
in Keynote are seamless. Games play more smoothly. And movie and
Video playback is better than ever before. You also get a spacious
trackpad with Multi-Touch technology. You can pinch, swipe, or
rotate to Zoom in on text, advance through a photo album, or adjust
an image. Or try out the new four-finger swipe. With this gesture,
you can navigate up and down to use Expose modes or left and right
to Switch between applications. Engineered for the wireless world,
MacBook Air also comes with 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, and Remote
Disc to deliver unparalleled wireless versatility. Mobile computing
has yet another new standard.
It wasn't long ago that everyone was shoveling dirt into
Apple's grave. The company was doomed, it was uniformly believed, for three reasons: lack
of compatibility with a Windows world, inept management and a massive scale disadvantage
in research and development that would create a deadly innovation gap. The Internet has
relieved (though not eradicated) the first problem by providing a common networking
platform for all operating systems. Steve Jobs seems to have nailed the second through a
combination of disciplined thinking and smart hiring. And as for the third well, it
never panned out.
Certainly, the argument that Apple would fall behind in
innovation sounded reasonable. R&D on the Wintel platform was spread among dozens of
big hardware and software companies, each of which was making vast investments in
developing new technologies and products. Apple, by contrast, was pretty much on its own.
There was no way it could come close to matching the dollars and time spent by the
Microsoft /Intel axis.

But look what happened. In product innovation, Apple has
leaped ahead of the competition. Most obviously, Apple's hardware looks a heck of a lot
better than everyone else's. But it's not just aesthetics. On the engineering side, the
company has delivered breakthroughs in accessibility (the swing-away sidewall on the G4
desktop), cooling (the fanless iMac), miniaturization and digitization (the G4 Cube),
wireless networking (Airport) and high-speed connectivity (FireWire). On the software
side, it has quietly pioneered the integration of the PC and the Internet, enabling users
to easily mount a Web-based "hard drive" on their desktops, and its iMovie
program sets the standard for simple video editing.
I have no idea what the future holds for Apple (or any
other company, for that matter), but its resurgence over the past two years proves one
thing to me: When it comes to innovation, money and scale don't matter all that much. What
matters is getting smart, creative people and giving them the freedom and the incentive
to, yes, think different. If you can do that, your company will stand out while others
fade into anonymity. Apple products have always stood out as creative examples of personal
computers that work to simplify computing tasks...
